The safety in food production facilities can mean one of two things:
- Food Safety
- & Employee Safety
There are a lot of regulations and laws that food industries need to comply with to legally produce and trade their products.
These standards cover every aspect of every site involved in the food industry. The growing, processing, production, transportation and sale of every item.
To ensure a food-safe floor the guidelines state that the floor finish should have the following characteristics:
- A seamless surface that won’t provide hiding places for dirt and bacteria and is easy to wash away unwanted substances.
- The durability to withstand the onsite operating conditions for an extended period, including the chemicals, foot traffic, oils, intensive cleaning, ingredients, temperatures, impacts, and point loading that it will inevitably be exposed to.
- Adequate drainage must be in place so that excess liquid and contaminants can be quickly washed out of the production and processing areas. Ideally, this should be stainless steel drainage incorporated into a floor that has been laid to a fall.
- Flooring that bonds well to the Substrate. Protective food facility flooring that inherently and fully bonds to the concrete substrate supports optimal facility hygiene.
- Flooring that can stand up to thermal stress. Using very hot water or steam to sanitize processing areas can quickly take its toll on any flooring not up to the challenge.
