Commercial Bakery Flooring & Coving Installation
In November 22, a large commercial cereal manufacturer approached Allied Finishes in view of upgrading their facility from a warehouse to a food grade production facility. As set out in the Food Safety Standards 3.2.2, flooring in food manufacturing facilities must be sealed, to prevent bacteria harbourage and growth. This facility had unsealed concrete, which did not comply with the standards, so an upgrade was necessary.
From the initial site visit, our consultant established the need for falls to drains, to prevent water pooling in main production areas. Our client was concerned about the need for a high slip resistant finish, so we provided various options to cater for their needs.
Multiple areas were involved, from the production areas to filling rooms and storage areas, totalling over 540sqm. The project involved falls to drains, coving, joints, and polyurethane cement flooring. Our consultant recommended our SteriFloor Stärke system to be installed, which is a highly engineered cementitious system that has excellent impact, chemical and wear resistance. In addition, it has active antimicrobial properties that not only prevents bacteria from growing on the floor but also attacks any bacteria that it encounters. This anti-microbial agent is active throughout the whole flooring system, so it remains active even as the floor wears down over time.
As this was a new food manufacturing facility, weekend work was not required, instead we were required to work towards a timeline for production start. The company did have specific requirements to be met in terms of food safety and worker health and safety, however with our knowledge and expertise in the food manufacturing space, this was not a challenge for us.
Our client was very impressed with the project, and was very pleased our team went over and above to assist them with their needs, including working on additional doorways and hobs to ensure they could start production when planned.
